Council support for Cultural Quarter music hub plans

The ongoing development of Leicester’s Cultural Quarter is set to get a boost with investment in a key building.

Leicester City Council has approved funding of up to £74,000 to support the development of new creative workspace at 68-70 Humberstone Gate East. This is part of ongoing work to encourage the reuse of empty buildings throughout the Cultural Quarter.

The project is being delivered by the Howie Smith Project, a social enterprise that brings empty and derelict spaces back into use for artistic and community benefit. Music education organisation Echo Factory has committed to running a music education hub from the building. The council’s funding is being matched by investment from the Howie Smith Project, Echo Factory and Bildurn Properties, which owns the building.

The building has been empty for several years, and the work will bring the building up to date and refurbish over 15,000 square feet of space for creative businesses.

Ajay Naik, of Echo Factory, said “Following the considerable joint investment by the project partners, Echo Factory has now committed to a long term lease on the property. We are delighted the plans are moving forward, and we can't wait to open our doors.”

Cllr Sue Waddington, assistant city Mayor for jobs and skills, said: “We remain committed to supporting further development in the Cultural Quarter by working with and supporting property owners to bring empty buildings back to life for creative uses.”
Leicester’s Cultural Quarter is one of four key business investment areas highlighted as a priority in the council’s Economic Action Plan. The council has been working together with building owners and creative businesses to stimulate investment in the area.

Refurbishment work is due to be completed in early summer 2016.
